What is Wikidot.com? Who stands behind it?
Wikidot.com is a new wiki network designed to host individual Wiki Sites and enable communication and cooperation between people. We simply offer a wiki for everyone. Or even more than one if someone wants.
There is no corporation behind Wikidot.com. Wikidot is owned by michal frackowiak and the project is located in Toruń, Poland.
What can I start a Site about?
About anything you want. The idea behind Wikidot is that we want to offer tools (framework, hosting etc.) but leave creativity to the Users.
(but please mind our Terms that forbid some content that might be illegal)
Why for free?
With the recent "Web 2.0" boom and radical drop of software development and maintenance costs more and more high-quality features become free out there in the Internet. For any web service there are two ways to survive:
- provide high-quality products and charge money for it — but it requires a lot of marketing effort etc.
- provide high-quality products and not charge money for it — this is the way we like more.
Will the Wikidot software be available for download?
We are seriously planning to prepare the software for public use and release it under (most probably) GPL license. But it is difficult to say: when. The first estimate is: autumn 2007. The development of the open-source edition is located at http://www.wikidot.org.
