I posted a suggestion for a standalone editor for the wikidot syntax some time ago. I think it is darely needed, far easier to make than a wysiwyg-editor and I guess, if wysiwyg is that needed, maybe it would be less pain to implement on such an external editor?

Anyway, it seems that a WYSIWYG editor is not in very high demand: http://community.wikidot.com/wishlist:wysiwyg-editor.

WYSIWYG editing is a VERY complicated subject and it looks like wiki farms that switched to it did not gain extra usability points by that. It requires a lot of browser-side and server-side transformations and document mangling and we have decided to move this feature to the Wikidot 2.0

At the time this news was posted we did have a prototype of wysiwyg editor and it was working very nice. But as you probably know the browser support for such editors is quite poor (inconsistent) and we would have to hack deeply into the software — we have decided that it would be better to concentrate on different things.

Hello,

This is one of the most impressive free Wiki hosting sites. The only drawback that is preventing me from starting my own wiki site here is the missing WYSIWYG editor. When will it be available?

BR,
tsafririh

Maybe I am just strange — But one of things I love most is the text editing. At some point, all wysiwyg tools (most notably, Microsoft Word!) gets confused (probably due to hidden tags and codes orphaned from repeated editing) and it get extrememly difficult for me to tame the darn thing.

But of course, I appreciate the fact that most normal people might find wysiwyg easier to use … If at all possible … Please make it an option for users to choose their own favorite default editing mode?

Thanks for all the great stuff!

Some time ago I have started working on a new, completely redesigned way we edit pages. The idea is to have both WYSIWYG (like a word processor) mode and the Wiki syntax mode as it is now. This requires a lot of work but after starting the effort 2 weeks ago I can see this is the right direction for Wikidot.

I have also decided to concentrate (almost) all efforts on finishing the editor so please do not expect any other extra features within the next month or two (apart from bugfixes of course).

As a base and engine for the new editor I have chosen one of the best available editors: TinyMCE, but with lots of extensions and totally redesigned interface.

What can you expect from the editor? It will do everything you can do with the pure wiki syntax now (basic formatting, including images, tables, links etc., also inserting modules) + draft auto-saving every minute (no more lost content!) + multi-language spellchecker.

I will post screenshots as soon as I make them. I deeply believe the new editing mode will leverage the Wiki experience to the higher level.

The next direct developments will be a modular authentication mechanism + OpenID server for users (should be quick) and the direct work on the open source code release.

hapy wikiing!!!

michal
