A wikidot search engine is useful when wiki is private.
As regards public wikis, do you really think that you can compete against Google ?
I once created this HowTo: add-a-custom-google-search-engine when I realized that searching from the Community site did not give me results from the Snippets nor from the Handbook

You can access the new search at http://www.wikidot.com/search:all and explore our public wikis! Site-wide (local) search for each wiki is still powered by our engine and is working fine.
