New front page launched

After dozens of hours, weeks of planning and many attempts we are more than happy to introduce the new front page for Wikidot. It is not just a theme, but the new structure of pages and a step in improving the perception of our service.

First of all we tried to see how people actually use Wikidot and highlight the most popular applications. We have also asked some of our users for feedback and testimonials that we could use with the new theme — thank you for all the great responses, we are simply overwhelmed by them!

We also wanted to feature more great Wikis on the front page. We will try to rotate the Wikis from time to time (BTW: if you have a popular / beautiful / useful Wiki and want to be featured, let us know).

As one of the next steps we will try to improve the "My Account" area and gradually convert it into a Dashboard with the overview of all activities related to your account, so that regular users would go directly there.

We hope the changes will improve usability and make Wikidot more productive and easy to work with.

Most credits should go to Lukasz (Squark) who designed the major part of the work and kept his eye on everything.

BTW: We realize there are still a few places to fix, we are working on it!

PS: I mean, withing personal account pages… I cannot find my way to Forum now…. At least, not as easy as before…

Well done!

I've said it before — I'm amazed by how masterfully the Polish team engages with English syntax.

The very first sentence is clumsy though:

Build a website easier than ever.

"Easier" is an adjective. You're looking for an adverb. How about this instead?

Build a website more easily than ever.

Or even better:

Now it's easier than ever to build a website.

Again, great job.

EDIT1: I am missing on a lot of sub-screens ( like the news ( forum) or the "doc:xyz.." series) the bottom group of links!

There is no Hosted by … and the other used links!

Have you changed the Linking - Convention in some points ?

Well, I launched a very ambitious project: a Wiki Encyclopedia about all the towns and villages, even the small ones, in my country, Portugal. And I'm amazed with it's success. More than 20.000 page views only in the first 30 days!

The wiki site is named Memória Portuguesa (Portuguese Memory), and already has more than 1.000 pages.

The project was praised in several local newspapers and I was interviewed by a national live radio station! The interview could be heard here: http://terrasdeportugal.wikidot.com/wiki:memoria-portuguesa-no-radio-clube-portugues.

Also, several city halls and governmental institutions praised the project and gave permission to use their web sites contents to increase the encyclopedia information.

And I also asked permission to use a sublime voice to illustrate that first page. I thought in a theme sung by Dulce Pontes, one of the most known Portuguese singers, with Ennio Morricone's music, called "O Amor a Portugal" (The Love to Portugal), from her 2003 album, "Focus". And for my surprise, she and her agency gave me the authorization to use the song! You can hear it on the first page.

I think that this project could be entitled to be exposed on the Featured Sites. Or that distinction is reserved only to the English sites?

BTW: Great work with the new design!

My wiki site in Portuguese is already on Wikidot's home page, on the Featured Sites section! It's a honor to me. Thanks so much!
Also, my wiki site is listed on 4th place of the month on the Top Sites What's Hot page! For me, it's a great reward. Thanks Wikidot!

I am curious… My site is in the front page of the Wikidot site, among those thumbnails… When i pass with the mouse over it it shows 11 contributors… How come it counted 11 contributors, if there are only 4 of us that really contribute to the site? I hope it does not count people who left message in my Guestbook, since it would be then really confusing and above all, not true….

BTW, my wiki is beautiful and useful for those who speak Serbian :)…. Can it be featured? ;)

PS: It is not in the front page anymore…. :(

As you can see only 20 wiki sites are featured at once. But we want more of them to appear on the front page. So we have to shuffle the thumbnails. From time to time your wiki will appear as thumbnails as a featured wiki and from time to time it'll disappear from the list ;).

I really like the new theme, cannot wait to use it on my iPhone Campus wiki. One suggestion: since iPhone is so popular now, is possible to come up a iPhone version of wiki or theme? I tried, but I can only make RSS to work, not other functions.

Hi Leo,

we do not have yet a plan (yet) how to handle mobile devices. Surely it would be great to support iPhone, but probably this would require not only the slightly different themes, but also changes in the interface. At the moment editing a page from iPhone is really painful, but possible. Agree that iPhone-specific themes would be the first step, because it would at least provide better readability.

I am an iPhone fan myself (I also humbly try to blog about it) and I can see a great potential for mobile access. Wikidot could be an ultimate tool for the iPhone.

We are open at the suggestions, ideas or thoughts about iPhone support!

Hi Michal,

Maybe the first thing to do is to support MoFuse auto redirect. I couldn't do it because it requires to put some PHP code on wiki.

BTW, I have looked your blog on using the new theme and tried it on my iPhone Campus wiki site, but it did give me a style like the new wiki homepage. Do you know why?
