- It is now possible to make individual categories (not the default category) private, on public sites.
Great ! Thanks to the team!
The "View" - row n the permissions looks fine!

I think it would be usefull if the changes are linked through to the design-page

Brilliant! I'll be using this very soon.

Yes, but usually the design page is closed or edited when the changes are published, and the change should then link to the documentation page.
Part of why I love Wikidot — it embraces the wiki spirit by providing so much flexibility, offering so many options, and engaging so successfully with a broad base of community-generated ideas.
So I'm puzzled whenever I come across one of Wikidot's error messages. Their tone strikes me as abrupt, abrasive, and generally off-putting. The messages emphasize the roadblock rather than the resolution.
The gateway to private categories is a case in point:
Private content
This area of the website is private and you don't have access to it. If you believe you need access to this area please contact the web site administrators.
If you already have an account, please sign in.
"private", "you don't have access", "believe you need" — it all sounds mistrustful and off-putting, as though users really shouldn't be there at all. I'd prefer a more welcoming tone that recognizes users' good faith.
I'd love to customize the landing page for our private categories (Describe what's behind the curtain and provide a join module button). But if customization isn't in the cards, here's a more encouraging message.
Reserved content
This area of the website is available to users with permission. If you'd like to access this area, please contact site administrators.
You might already have the necessary permission — please sign in first.
Brunhilda pointed me to how I can customize this — that's great! I couldn't find that feature in documentation. Is it there?
I still think we'd all benefit from using more accepting, inclusive language in the generic page.
Beautiful suggestion Scott! Really beautifully worded!

Well, it's in the changelog: http://www.wikidot.com/forum/t-216868/2010-02-04
There doesn't seem to be anything in the documentation about Private Categories at all. Perhaps it could be added here? http://www.wikidot.com/faq:private-sites . What do you think the wording should be?
