This is the first newsletter from the Wikidot.com project
(http://www.wikidot.com). Wikidot.com is online for 2 months now
and has already gathered more than 2000 users that run almost 1000
sites. Wikidot.com grows very dynamically with many interesting
features hard to find anywhere else.
And this is just the beginning ;-)
A lot of things happened in the meantime and we will try to
summarize some of them here:
NO ADS
Wikidot.com is offering hosting of Wikis in exchange for showing ads on
the created pages. But since there are quite many people not very pleased
with such a solution we have decided to extend our offer and let you
choose between free (ads-supported) or paid (some small fee, ~6$/month)
hosting. However we need some time to implement all the infrastructure
for this move and in the meantime all the sites at Wikidot.com are free
of ads. For free ;-)
NEW THEMES
There are a few new graphical themes that everyone can use on his/her
site. Check them out at http://www.wikidot.com/themes:preview.
More themes are coming.
SNIPPETS
Wikidot.com uses quite a powerful wiki syntax which has been designed to
be both easy and flexible. We understand however that sometimes it might
be difficult to use. So we have started a new site that contains code
snippets pieces of code you can copy and reuse on your own pages. See
the available snippets (or add your own solution) at
http://snippets.wikidot.com.
PRIVATE SITES
We have received MANY requests for "private wikis" - i.e. readable and
modifiable only by allowed members. And yes - Wikidot.com will offer
such a feature in the near future. If you are interested please contact
us at moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus and we shall notify you when this feature is
available.
WIKIDOT GOES OPEN-SOURCE
And one of the most important news: the software that powers Wikidot.com
will be available as open-source. What does it mean? It will be
available free of charge for downloading, installing on your own server,
modifying and even redistributing.
We hope this will not only improve the quality of the Wikidot.com
service (online hosting of Wikis), but also allow creation of one of the
best Wiki solutions ever - both in our hosted environment and as the
software itself.
The development will be hosted at http://www.wikidot.org. We will also
organize the framework for plugins/extensions/themes development. Please
visit this site for more info or to get involved!
POLISH TRANSLATION
Our effort in makeing localized language packages for Wikidot resulted
in the first localization: http://pl.wikidot.com is the Polish
front-end to Wikidot.com. The user interface (e.g. "my account" and
site management) is 80% localized now.
We are looking forward to supporting more languages.
NEED HELP?
If you need any help with creating, editing or managing your site you
can always visit the Wikidot.com Community Site
(http://community.wikidot.com) and ask for help there. You can also
contact us at moc.todikiw|troppus#moc.todikiw|troppus to ask for help or assistance.
best regards - Michal Frackowiak
