What is Wiki?

According to Wikipedia, the world largest wiki site:

A Wiki ([ˈwiː.kiː] <wee-kee> or [ˈwɪ.kiː] <wick-ey>) is a type of website that allows users to add, remove, or otherwise edit and change most content very quickly and easily via website.

And that is it! At the Wikidot.com publishing network we offer everyone a Site (your-site-name.wikidot.com) — a customizable place in the Internet where Users can edit content, upload files, communicate and collaborate.

When using any of the Wiki systems you do not have to care about technical details (like HTML language, how to edit pages, how to create forum for your community etc.). At Wikidot.com we take care of these things. You can easily concentrate on the Content, growing your Community etc.

On every page (where you have permissions to) you can find the edit button - click it and you can edit content of the page! Simply edit content, click save and your changes are published within seconds.

PROFESSIONAL WIKI TECHNOLOGY

We are providing professional, high quality sites just for everyone. Wikidot is a tool to create a website without knowing HTML, PHP, JavaScript etc. With Wikidot you can create your personal site, your company's website as well as big portals and huge community forums with thousands of users.

SAFETY

We do live database replication to a backup server and we synchronize file uploads live too. Our primary servers use top-quality hardware, redundant disk drives (RAID 1), redundant power supplies units and power lines, redundant internet connections… We are using secure access, so your private data is safe. We are doing our best to keep Wikidot.com accessible and reliable and to keep your data safe and consistent! And it looks that we are pretty good at it.

HOSTING

We're hosting your sites on our servers. Our solution is very secure and you don't have to worry about data loss. We are not limiting your site. You will have no bandwidth or transfer limits. You can have millions of visitors per day, I doesn't bother. We would be even very happy if your site will become so popular.

STORAGE

We give you free space for your storage. For free, you can create 5 sites with 300MB of storage for each. If it is not enough, you can always make an upgrade and have as much storage as you need.

UNLIMITED NUMBER OF PAGES

When you create a site, you can have unlimited number of pages on it, including forum, blogs etc. It does not count to storage.

CONTROL OVER ADS

Although from time to time we display ads on free sites, this is done as discretely as possible. Moreover, we are giving you simple opt-out options which transfer all the control to you! If you want, you can start earning money with Google AdSense whenever someone clicks ads on your pages. The best thing is that you can set if the ads are displayed to everyone or only to unlogged Wikidot users. You also have control over placement, colors, sizes — and you can start now!

POWERFUL WIKI SYNTAX AND ENGINE

Our Wiki Syntax is certainly one of the most powerful available. Read more or try it in the Sandbox demo. Our engine is built not only to handle simple sites, but whole portals. Wikidot It also allows to embed LaTeX-style equations, bibliography items, footnotes and more features. (also look at snippets.wikidot.com for more examples)

YOUR OWN DOMAIN

If you decide that you do not want to use the free subdomain within .wikidot.com — we can handle any other domain (such as www.example.com) for you.

FORUM FOR EACH SITE

Wiki pages are not always sufficient for online communities. Forums are what you really want! Take a look at our Community Forum to have a glimpse.

FORUM SIGNATURE

You can set up a signature, which will be displayed automatically under your post on every forum.

AVATAR

You can upload a small image which will become your avatar. Your avatar will be displayed next to your username, e.g. in form posts. You can also set default avatar or turn it off completely. You can also choose if you want users' avatars to be displayed on your site.

GRAVATAR INTEGRATION

For anonymous users we have Gravatar integration. You can see user's avatar and name even if the user is not registered and logged in to Wikidot. Of course if the user has configured his Gravatar account. E-mail address (which is never displayed) is enough to identify user. Note that Gravatar is often used on many web services and blogging platforms.

KARMA

Karma is an indicator of user's engagement and experience. It looks like a battery charge indicator :) It starts highlighting bar from the bottom (light green) to the top (red). The highest karma level (red) indicated that user is very advanced and experienced — a Wikidot Guru. You can disable karma indicator if you don't want to show it or you can choose if it should be displayed on your Site (if you will set "no" — all users on your site will not have the karma indicator displayed next to their avatar).

PRIVATE MESSAGES

We let our Users communicate easily by sending private messages. Each User can have a list of contacts and can also configure who is allowed to send him messages.

EASY NAVIGATION AND USER INTERFACE

There is a simple way to create your own menus: top and side. Creating navigation elements and links is very simple. Adding breadcrumbs and sitemap to your site will make navigation even more clear and comprehensive.

CATEGORIES

Categorize your content using page categories (namespaces), tags and "parent page" relation. Generate tag clouds, listings or even structured site maps.

TAGS

You can assign tags for every page on your site. With tags, your visitors can easily find the most relevant content without browsing page by page. It is useful to create advanced search systems, catalogs etc.

ROLES AND PERMISSIONS

You can decide who can edit, rename, attach files, replace/delete files within your pages. Who can start new forum threads, add new posts, edit posts and much more. Open your Site totally by allowing anonymous edits or keep number of your editors under control.

MEMBERSHIP ON YOUR SITE

You can also allow Users to join your Sites and assign them roles (pages/forum Moderators, Administrators or just Members).

THEMES

Themes can be assigned to each of categories within a site separately. You can also use your own custom themes (CSS-based). Check out our simple theme previewer (we will add new themes soon!). More themes are on their way.

LICENSE OF YOUR CONTENT

We highly recommend using Creative Commons licenses or GFDL for the content. Licenses can be easily chosen from the site management panel.

SECURE SSL LOGIN

When using Wikidot.com you can be sure your private data is transmitted safely! No more plain-text passwords.

SSL (HTTPS) ACCESS

Need more security? Enable SSL access to your Wiki. The whole connection between your browser and Wikidot will be encrypted.

BACKUPS

You can easily create and download a ZIP archive containing a snapshot of your Wiki — source for all the pages and attached files.

ADVANCED WEB STATISTICS

Web statistics allow to monitor and analyze the activity on your page, including such detailed information like: what web browser are using your visitors or how much time they spend on each site average.

FAVICONS

You can choose your own favicon for your site instead of the default. Favicon is an icon of the site which can be seen in the title bar of your Web Browser. Very nice thing :)

EDITING OF <META> TAGS

You can set up <META> tags for the whole site or separately for every page. It can be useful e.g. to change the description of your site, keywords found by search engines etc.

CLONING SITE

If you need, you can clone your Site. It means that all your site is copied to the other address. E.g. you can make a copy of mywebsite.wikidot.com and name it mywebsite2.wikidot.com. After this operation you have two, identical websites, which can be edited separately.

CONTROLLING OUTGOING PINGBACKS

You can control how the pingbacks will behave on your Site.

(Some of the features above might require purchasing an account upgrade)
